Why I record at night
4 min read
The room breathes differently after midnight. The microphones hear it, and so do you.
A piano is an acoustic animal, and like most acoustic animals it is quieter at night.
There is a temptation in record-making to solve every problem with a better microphone or a smarter DAW. Sometimes the solution is just to wait until the city sleeps.
My last three sessions have all started at 11pm and ended at 4am. The takes are slower, the air is denser, and there is a kind of honesty that only shows up after the second coffee.
